Applied Entomology (360c)

The applied entomology is concerned with the biology, ecology and control of insects in agricultural and forest ecosystems and the resulting impact on the environment. The goal of our work is the economically and ecologically sustainable control of insect pests. Teaching includes both basic and applied entomological knowledge. Entomology is an essential part of the lectures in plant protection and phytomedicine and, to varying degrees, of lectures in other disciplines where reference to insects is required.

Insects in agroecosystems

Insects play a central role in agroecosystems (e.g. in vegetable or fruit cultivation). On the one hand, as pests, they lead to yield losses, on the other hand, they fulfill important ecosystem services as pollinators and as natural antagonists of pest species. The goal of our agroecological research is to improve our understanding of how insect pests can be regulated with minimal impact on the ecosystem, and how beneficial insects can be optimally integrated to support biological pest control.  Links: Fruit-growing Vegetable-production
